âWho are you looking for?â Conrad looked over his shoulder at the random people milling about behind the auditorium seating. Cora kept looking over her shoulder, but Saucy was seated in the front row.
âPeggy. I thought she might drop by tonight with the dress she altered. I wanted to see how things are going with her hunt for the costumes.â
âHas she asked Eleanor about it?â Conrad pointed toward the stage. âShe may know if there are old costumes at the school.â
âNo, I donât think she has. She mentioned it, but I suggested she not do that. At least not right away. Olive is a touchy topic with Eleanor. They were not friends.â
Conrad nodded. âSaucy doesnât appear to be doing anything in this play. Iâm not sure why he comes to rehearsals. He just sits there and watches them.â
âI know I canât understand it! He must have a very small part. I donât know anything about this play, so I donât know what part he could have.â
âWhatâs it called again?â Conrad frowned. She had told him more than once, but he couldnât remember.
âMurder in the Heir. H-E-I-R.â
âMaybe heâs the guy that gets murdered?â
âPerhaps! That would be a great part for him. No lines to learn!â
âBut you donât really need to rehearse for that.â Conrad chuckled.
âMaybe he has a brief scene where he dies on stage and thatâs all.â
âThat could be.â Conrad nodded. âHere comes Eleanor.â
âGood evening, Cora. Chief.â
âHi, Eleanor.â Cora reached out her hand to stop her. âCan you tell me what role Saucy has this time? Heâs not been performing tonight.â
âNo, the part weâre working on tonight isnât his scene. He doesnât have too many lines this time.â Eleanor smiled, aware of Saucyâs opening night anxiety from previous plays.
âIs he the guy that gets murdered?â Cora turned in her seat.
âNo. Thatâs Reuben Hobbs, Francineâs husband. You know Reuben, donât you?â Eleanor looked around the room. âI donât see him at the moment, but he was here.â
âYes, I know them. So, what part does Saucy play?â
Eleanor smiled and turned to walk down the aisle. âYouâll have to come to the play and find out!â
âThat woman is exasperating!â Cora scrunched up her nose and squeezed her eyes shut as Conrad chuckled.
âDo you have your tickets for the show?â
âOf course, I do, for both of us. Center aisle, fifth row. Right where I like to sit.â
âWell, then,â Conrad held his hands out. âWeâll find out then.â
âThatâs not the point and you know it!â
Conrad swallowed his laughter. âHere comes Peggy. Sheâs coming down the aisle.â
Cora turned in her seat to stop her. âYou have the dress done?â
âI do. Hi Chief.â
Conrad nodded his hello.
Cora lifted the plastic and looked at the bottom of the dress. Peggy had cleaned it and tucked the bottom ruffle up to hem it. She removed the ruffles on the bodice and replaced it with blue satin ribbon. âItâs lovely.â
âThank you.â
âIs that my dress?â Nina walked up and peeked under the plastic. âI love it! I can even wear that after the play is over!â
âIâm glad you like it.
